Are there any alternative methods to calculate gematria other than using a calculator?

Gematria is the practice of assigning numerical values to the letters of words or phrases for various spiritual and mathematical purposes. While a calculator is the most common way to calculate gematria, there are in fact several alternative methods which can be used as well.

The first, and probably most commonly known way to calculate gematria is by using a conversion table. This table assigns a numerical value to each letter of the Hebrew alphabet, with aleph (א) being equal to one, bet (ב) equal to two, and so on up until tav (ת) which is equal to 400. Once you understand how the letters are assigned numerical values, calculating gematria becomes relatively simple as all one needs to do is add up all of the values for each letter in a given word or phrase.

Another alternative method for calculating gematria involves the use of an abacus. Although slightly more complicated than using a conversion table, an abacus can be employed to good effect in determining gematria values. Each bead on an abacus typically has a numerical value rather than being representative of binary counting; by adding up these vales for each column in turn, it's possible to determine quite easily what numeric total that individual string of letters equates to according to gematria standards.

For those who may not have access to either a conversion table or an abacus or find them too difficult, there's another way which may suit them better- by making use of tools meant specifically for converting Hebrew letters into non-Hebrew numbers.
